Animal Spirit Guides & Totems

Have animals been trying to tell you something...
Animal spirit totems are very personal. They are viewed in different ways according to who each of us are as individuals. The basic principle of an animal totem is that an animal spirit gives us insight into ourselves. We are given a glimpse of the divine powers at work in our world. And through that connection, we can transcend to a place of healing for ourselves and other people.

The author of Animal-Speak, Ted Andrews, defines animal totems in this way:  "Any natural object, animal, or being whose phenomena and energy you feel closely associated with during your life".

A totem is considered to be a power, sometimes called 'medicine.' It walks down our path with us on our spiritual and personal journey in this lifetime. We can tap into the energies of the animal totems for strength, healing for ourselves, and for others. Higher level beings, along with our Spirit Guide, are said to shapeshift, transforming their energy bodies into animals to send us important messages. These animal guides show us the way, helping to teach us what we need to know.

Have you been attracted to particular animals over the course of your lifetime? Do you own figurines of a certain animal, hang pictures up of them, watch them at the zoo? Do you see a particular animal on a regular basis and, at times, think it seems out of the ordinary for this to happen? Many of us overlook and miss the animals when they are speaking to us.

But the infinite is patient. If we take the time and effort to connect with Mother Earth and her animal children, we can learn to harness the medicine that comes through these wonderous and intelligent creatures of nature. They can enlighten our perceptions, spiritually and personally, and help us grow as people. And through us, this new found source of energy can be shared with others in the world.

Animal totems and guides choose us according to what is necessary for our growth at a particular time. It may also be that you have one main power totem who does not just, come and go, but encompasses "who we are," all the time. This animal, generally, will be the one who you have felt most strongly connected with during your life, but not necessarily so.

How to develop a relationship with your animal totems:  Study the animals' behaviors, hunting habits, natural instincts, life rythym cycles and how it lives. Honor them by keeping physical reminders of them near you. Such items can include statues and figurines, photos and posters, and pictures that you draw yourself, and so on.

It maybe that your animal(s) do not live in your geographical area. These physical symbols of your Animal Guides will work as well. Meditate and calm your mind, ask the Animal Spirit for help, and you will draw naturally what is needed.

Everything in nature is connected... There is one hoop for everything, and everything has it's place and purpose. You can find your place and purpose, which may be ever changing.

Study the location of where your animal(s) live, and the nearby plants, streams, lakes, rocks, stones, cliffs, trees, etc. By doing so you keep the sacred balance of all things and learn all there is to know about your totems.

Make an effort to communicate with all the animals around you. Pay attention to your surroundings and notice what animal(s) speak to you. You will be on your way to connecting with your personal animal totems, if you do these things...
