Easter Lilies

Traditions are part of the celebration for every holiday. For Easter, they might include egg decorating, chocolate bunnies, jelly beans and Easter lilies. The beautiful flower stands for many of the elements of Easter including life, hope, purity and spring.

Easter lilies are a frequent subject of myths, art and stories that relate the spirit they embody. Jesus spoke of their effortless beauty when he gave his Sermon on the Mount, comparing them to Solomon who could not be as lovely as they are.

The nature of being a mother has often been described in terms of Easter lilies. Hera, the Greek god considered to be the mother in heaven, created lilies which emerged from her milk. For the Romans Hera was called Juno, but the story of lilies is the same. As Hera/Juno nursed Heracles/Hercules some of the milk spilled, falling to the skies as the Milky Way and to the earth to form lilies.

A direct connection between Easter lilies and Easter is that they were supposedly found at Gethsemane after Christ's crucifixion. As he suffered he sweated, and from the sweat sprang the lilies. Easter lilies adorn churches at Easter where they stand for the resurrection and new hope for everlasting life.

The Virgin Mary is also closely associated with Easter lilies and their pure whiteness. For example many paintings show Gabriel giving her a bouquet of lilies when he told her that she would bear God's son. Another common depiction is of saints bringing Mary and the new born Jesus lilies.

A WW1 soldier brought Bermuda lilies, most commonly known as Easter lilies, home in a suitcase. Some friends of his planted them and soon everyone who saw them wanted some. Soon they were spreading all over the west coast and throughout America.

Cats should not eat Easter lilies. In some cases they can be fatal to our feline friends. So if there's a cat in the house it's a good idea not to have lilies around. Only cats are affected, so don't fret about dogs and Easter lilies. Always make sure that any plant brought in the house is safe if eaten by children or pets.

One beautiful representation of everything about Easter is the lovely Easter lilies. Millions of people use them to decorate homes and churches during this important holiday. Easter lilies make great gifts, or simple but elegant decorations for your home during Easter and spring.
