Dirt Devil

Many people use the popular handheld vacuum cleaner called a Dirt Devil. It comes in two main types, power for homes and RV for mobile homes. But many people use it in their car. The brand name also includes carpet cleaners and larger handheld vacuum cleaners.

Dirt Devil has its roots in a company founded in 1905. Royal Manufacturing patented a home vacuum system called Cyclone. 25 million of these vacuums have been sold. When they first were sold they had metal cases.

In the 1980s Royal Manufacturing came out with a vacuum with a plastic case. This line was marketed as the Royal Dirt Devil. As they became more and more popular the word royal became less and less prominent until it disappeared altogether. The short name stuck.

The company continues to sell the Royal line. It is both higher quality and more expensive than the Dirt Devil. However, the company operates under a different name. That name is TTI Floor Care North America. TTI is an abbreviation for Techtronic Industries which is a company in Hong Kong that makes other vacuum cleaners like Hoover. It's not uncommon for this to be the case in the modern business world. Mergers and acquisitions cause former rivals to be owned by the same parent company. Then those companies continue to operate under various brand names. They continue to manufacture and improve separate lines of products. That's because those products already have established sales. It would be foolish to discard those.

From 1995 to 2005 the Dirt Devil had a distinctive and well-known slogan. It was “nothing escapes the power of a Dirt Devil. In 2005 that slogan was retired in favor of a new slogan Fight Dirty. It's a play on words since a vacuum cleaner will fight dirt.

The Dirt Devil Hand Vac was introduced in 1984. It was a classic design with a rotating agitator brush to force dirt out of carpets. It also had a hose to reach hard to reach places. It sold over 25 million units, more than any other hand vac had ever sold in the United States. That brought in money which made future innovation possible.

11 years later, 1996, an upgraded model was introduced. This Dirt Devil was called the Ultra Hand Vac. It featured increased suction power, as well as an extendable hose that folded into the unit. This model is still sold at some stores.

In 2005 Dirt Devil began selling its classic model. The distinctive red classic had a HEPA filter and a cup to collect the dirt. That meant it was bagless. Nobody likes to deal with those dirty vacuum cleaner bags.

The Dirt Devil has been around for a long time. Constant innovations mean it will likely be around for a long time into the future.

Weekly Poem: 'Root' 16 Jan 2012 at 8:33am
By Terrance Hayes My parents would have had me believe there was no such thing as race there in the wild backyard, our knees black with store-bought grass and dirt, black as the soil of pastures or of orchards grown above graves. We clawed free the stones and filled their beds with soil and covered the soil with sod as if we owned the earth. We worked into the edge of darkness and rose in the ...
